Welcome adventurers and knowledge seekers to the all encompassing collection of Wizard lore and knowledge. This Lexicon is a work in progress, please use what is available and forgive us for what is missing. In this tome we hope to include all relevant topics pertaining to the Wizard class; character creation, game play, leveling, skills, research, equipment, teleporting, quad kiting, quests, raiding, and more! Many scholars are responsible for this repository of knowledge, and was painstakingly gathered here for your enrichment.

Character Creation

First let us review the class description in bold:

Wizards dedicate their lives to learning the powers of fire, ice, and magic; channeling their knowledge into ever more destructive spells to unleash upon their enemies. Wizards are primarily a magic-using class, with the ability to wear cloth armor and wield blunt weapons and daggers.

Wizards are the most single-minded of spell casters, with the majority of their spells dedicated to delivering massive amounts of damage as rapidly as possible. To aid in their constant search for power, wizards have also perfected the art of teleportation - allowing them to instantly transport themselves and their allies to the most remote corners of Norrath and beyond.

Wizards are a tightly focused class, gaining the greatest ability to deal magical damage in exchange for limited variety in their spell selection. Wizards are capable adventurers both solo and in groups, and are an excellent choice for players who live blow things up.

Hail readers! Wizards in the modern era are considered capable soloists, whether it's single target kills or quad kiting, they can level quickly and efficiently once you can start quadding. Unfortunately this class lacks power in dungeons as the sheer numbers of mobs overcome any kind of mana regeneration. Most people will refuse to group with Wizards because of the perceived weakness in chain pulling groups. It's true that in a chain pulling situation a Wizard will fall behind other classes in damage per second (DPS) and this is where the perception of the 'lazy Wizard' comes from. A Wizard spends most of their time sitting and medding, action comes in short bursts of frenzied activity, making the path to maximum level a lonely endeavor. The big payoff is that Wizards are an absolutely critical raid class in every expansion. This is where the class shines and comes into it's own. Between the burst DPS, kiting potential with the

Races

The Wizard class may be chosen by five different races, all of them fairly similar in statistics besides human who have a significant intelligence disadvantage. There are different perks to each race which we shall discuss. In the end, statistics aren't as important as choosing the character you want to look at the most, there is no significant reason to play one race over the other for this class.

Dark elf is the only evil Wizard race, and even if you pick Solusek Ro as your diety (which you should!) there will be many places you will be KOS. Starting with ultravision, high intelligence, access to a library, two excellent noobie zones as well as half wall vision might be enough to make Dark elf one of the best choices alone. Add in the hide ability and you have a strong argument for this, hide is absolutely invaluable while medding, and in many cases almost as good as feign death for a pause button. This is unique to the race.

Allocating your starting points is fairly straightforward on a Wizard, 25 to intelligence and 5 to strength or stamina is generally accepted as the best choice. One could make an argument for 25 stamina if you knew you would be acquiring best in slot gear, however for most players this is out of reach. Once a player has quested the

it helps to cover the lower hitpoints/stamina with a 800 point skin shield. Stacking intelligence and +mana will serve you well regardless of level or playstyle.

Intelligence and Stamina Conversions



Mana calculations fluctuate depending how much how intelligence you are adding or subtracting when equipping the item or receiving a buff. Test for yourself to see, however the math below is fairly accurate.



Below or at 200 WIS/INT

   Mana gained = ((80 * LEVEL) / 425) * WIS/INT 

Above 200 WIS/INT

   Mana gained = ((40 * LEVEL) / 425) * WIS/INT 

NOTE: This calculation will often be a few points of mana off. This is because the decimal seems to fluctuate based on how much WIS/INT is added, probably due to a rounding issue of some kind. For example:

1. Adding 100 WIS/INT gives you roughly 11.27 mana per point of WIS/INT at level 60 under 200 WIS/INT.

2. Adding 10 WIS/INT gives you roughly 11.3 mana per point of WIS/INT at level 60 under 200 WIS/INT.

3. Adding 5 WIS/INT gives you roughly 11.6 mana per point of WIS/INT at level 60 under 200 WIS/INT.

4. Adding 2 WIS/INT gives you roughly 11.0 mana per point of WIS/INT at level 60 under 200 WIS/INT.

5. Adding 7 WIS/INT gives you roughly 11.5 mana per point of WIS/INT at level 60 under 200 WIS/INT.


Here are the stamina tables for level 50 and level 60, note that choosing 25 stamina at character creation will yield 50 hit points at level 50 and 60 hit points at level 60 compared to roughly 275 mana at level 60.

Research

Research is a tradeskill that allows a Wizard to combine various Runes found in the world into spells. You can train at it level 16, however it's cap levels with you. Below is a table showing the trivials and skill caps at the various spell rank levels. Please note that the easiest and most effeciant way to evel this skill is by training it with your Guildmaster. Generally training to 100/110 skill and brute force combining the final spells is enough. Wizard research is also the least lucrative.

Specialization

Specialization is the means by which a spellcaster increases their mana efficiency in a given area of magic. Granted to intelligence-based casters (wizard, enchanter, necromancer, and magician) at level 20 and priest classes (cleric, shaman, and druid) at level 30, they obtain the ability to specialize in the five fields of magic. Whilst a caster can gain skill in all five, only one field can exceed a skill of 50. Whichever skill first exceeds 50 becomes the primary Specialization of the caster from then on. If you choose the wrong specialty, you can alter it by completing a Respecialization quest in the Temple of Solusek Ro. The formula is approximately 1% mana preservation per 18.7 skill points, resulting in a savings of just under 3% mana preservation at skill 50, and nearly 11% at skill 200.

Equipment

For better or worse, wizards just don't benefit from gear as much as melee dps classes. While melee characters can easily boost their dps by equipping an improved ratio weapon or a worn haste item, wizards cannot boost their spell damage. The best we can usually hope for is improving total mana (for total burst damage), total hitpoints (for raw survivability) and total resists (for resisting aoes in raid situations and nukes/debuffs while leveling). There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, in the form of mana-free nuke clickies and items that improve mana regen.

Mana-free nuke clickies will make the single largest difference in a wizard's effectiveness. These items come in three tiers:

Tier 1 includes Solist's Robe of Invocation, Vermilion Robe of Torrefaction and Shissar Elementalist's Staff. These are high-end raid drops that can dramatically improve a wizard's long-term sustained dps.

Tier 2 includes Velious armor quest robes (such as Sage's Robe) and the Vermilion Orb of Torrefaction. While these are less useful than the Tier 1 clickies, they are still useful for finishing off fleeing mobs. The Sage's Robe has a very long cast time, but is very hard to resist. It can also be clicked as early as level 1 and makes for a very strong power-leveling item.

Tier 3 includes Solist's Icy Wand. This item is particularly useful before level 20 and can be used to conserve mana on fleeing mobs for many levels afterward. However, this item will not see much usage at higher levels.

Mana regen improvement items include items with a worn Flowing Thought (FT) effect that increases passive mana regen (such as White Dragonscale Boots) and hitpoint to mana conversion clickies.

Generally, FT items come from cutting-edge raid encounters and will be among a wizard's final best-in-slot upgrades. Because FT items of the same tier do not stack on P99, the best a wizard can obtain is +8 mana regen from a combination of Essence of Nature (+5), White Dragonscale Boots (+2), and one of the several +1 FT items currently available.

Hitpoint to mana conversion items (specifically the Manastone and Manna Robe) can provide 20 mana in exchange for 60 hps. Because wizards cannot heal themselves and generally don't have many hps, the mana conversion effect isn't very useful on its own. However, because mana conversion will eat away at a rune before damaging hps, these items pair very well with the 800 hp rune from the wizard epic Staff of the Four. As long as the epic rune is intact, a wizard can gain "free" mana from these items.

The Manastone is instant-cast, but can only be used in classic zones. Because it no longer drops, it is also very rare and very expensive to buy from another player. The Manna Robe can be used anywhere, but has a 3-second cast time. It still drops rarely from Trakanon, and is a very useful item for a wizard who doesn't mind lots of clicking.

It is worth noting that the Staff of the Four clicky effect also provides +3 mana regen that stacks with enchanter and druid mana regen spells.
